Mastermind Twisted Wheel

The Name lives on

On Friday 19 September 2008 - BBC2 8.00pm 'Mastermind' ... contestant's chosen subjest 'The Mod Generation'.

Question: 'Name the Mod Club which was opened in Brasennose Street, Manchester in 1963'.

Answer: 'The Twisted Wheel' ... 'Correct'

And this guy went on to win the whole contest.

We find this particularly funny as Ivor always likes to say 'correct' when he agrees with something.

If anyone has the clip it would be fun to YouTube it.

Thanks to Kevin D for the alert

Welcome to The Twisted Wheel Club

Ivor AbadiHi there, Ivor Abadi calling!

I know you will enjoy surfing this genuine and authentic site, dedicated to the Twisted Wheel and the music of the 60s.

For those of you who don’t know, I along with my brothers Jack and Phillip were the originators and owners of the Twisted Wheel Club, Manchester. One of the most famous 60s coffee dance clubs for live Rhythm and Blues, & Soul music, that subsequently became the birth place of Northern Soul.

I have designed this site specifically to help people revive the experience of the 60s social revolution, support the release of my book, and give our younger generation an insight into what made these times so special. This book will be about the Twisted Wheel and the 60s era. I will be including many amazing unheard stories, told with fond memories and humour.

You will be able to find old friends and make new friends who share an interest in great music and great times.

History –The Birth of a Legend

Birth of a legend (Written by Ivor Abadi)

Brazenose St We didn’t know what we wanted to create. We just knew that there was a requirement, a need for young people to meet and communicate, get their parents out of their hair!........................

We knew something was missing for us youngsters, we weren’t sure what! There wasn’t really a ‘scene’ at the time to alter, so we had to create one. My older brother Jack had been involved with one of the first coffee dance club venues in the UK, El-Rio, in Macclesfield in 1956, along with Danny Betesh (Later Kennedy St Enterprises), Johnny Sueke & Sydney Sagar (all of whom were close friends). I worked there in the evenings after completing my 9 to 5 job in textiles. I would jump on the train to Macclesfield after work, fall asleep and was lucky if I woke up in time to get off the train and not find myself arriving in London. I worked in textiles from the age of 16 till I was 21 (1962). In 1963 there were still very few alcoholic clubs and so we created one of the first coffee bar, live music, dancing venues in the UK.
